The Linguistics Department has a strong record of preparing students for Ph.D. study elsewhere. Approximately one-fourth to one-third of our M.A. graduates go on to advanced study at some time in their careers, and they are admitted to top-ranked theoretical and applied programs in universities in the U.S. and other countries.
Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages
The Master of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (MTESOL) program takes a broad perspective on English language teaching. Depending on studentsā chosen career path, the curriculum prepares graduates to teach English as a foreign language to different learner populations, from elementary to post-secondary schools.
Requiring only two semesters of full-time study, this program permits participants to earn an MTESOL degree within a relatively short time to begin or return to teaching immediately thereafter.
MTESOL Courses & Degree Requirements
Complete a minimum of 31 credit hours with a minimum of a B grade in each course. Students may transfer up to 8 credit hours to cover required courses, as approved by the program director. In addition to the required courses, students must take at least one elective.
Culminating Experience
As a culminating experience, studentsā overall learning in the MTESOL program will be assessed by using the e-Portfolio that is developed in LING 6970: Culminating Experience Professional Portfolio Seminar, the graduate culminating experience seminar.
