51ÂÒÂ×’s Southeast Hub — through grants from Ohio STEM Learning Network, Department of Energy, and American Electric Power Foundation — is making the following STEM resources available for educators in Appalachian Ohio to borrow to enhance STEM learning in your classroom and in the outdoor classroom.
These materials can be borrowed for up to 30 days based on availability. Email Jen Bowman at bowmanj2@ohio.edu for availability and pick-up/drop-off details.
These kits can be used to test biological water quality, chemical water quality, and physical habitat. Various tools and tests also can help students learn more about macroinvertebrates and fish, water quality, and the the substrate material in a stream.
Powered by the and in partnership with , the Portable Innovation Labs are facilitate educational opportunities by providing teachers and students with the resources that schools may not be able to purchase on their own. With the exception of easy-to-find consumable materials, all necessary items are provided.
The curricula are culturally relevant and hands-on. All were designed to be taught with a transdisciplinary mindset, making it easier to cover multiple learning standards in more than one subject. They also connect to career pathways ranging from Robotics to Forensics.
In many ways, these activities equip teachers with tools they can use to help foster STEM identity.

The Autonomous Delivery lab blends coding proficiency and computer science skills into an educational journey for students who want to immerse themselves in coding and robotics. Students discover how to use technology to simplify tasks using coding and experimentation with their Sphero robots. It's the power of interactive learning and technology that make the Autonomous Delivery lab an amazing adventure.
Step into the exciting world of coding with our Ozobot Portable Innovation Labs (PILs). These activities blend fun and education, allowing students to develop coding and problem-solving skills using Ozobots and both color and block coding. From guiding visitors through a zoo maze to designing a recycling system or programming a robot dance routine, the Ozobot Lab challenges students to think critically and work collaboratively. Hands-on experiences with real-world applications make these labs a dynamic addition to any classroom.
Students will participate in ecological inquiries to survey the avian biodiversity around their communities. It is important for students to understand the importance of birds on the ecosystem and how, though they migrate, they utilize the schoolyard to be one of their homes. Utilizing a set of classroom Curious Critter books, students will get to examine different types of birds before they go out in search of feathers, nests, or eggshells. By becoming ornithologists for the lesson, students will observe, research, design, and create around the topic of schoolyard birds.
Explore the possibilities of renewable energy with our engaging Alternative Energy Portable Innovation Labs (PILs). These hands-on activities inspire creativity and critical thinking as students delve into solar, wind, and other renewable energy sources. From designing off-grid tiny homes to playing interactive games like Energetic, participants will learn how to reduce carbon footprints, optimize energy use, and create sustainable living solutions. Packed with resources and flexible activities, this lab seamlessly integrates into existing curricula while fostering collaboration and real-world problem-solving skills.

Climate Action Kits are a STEM teaching tool that allows teachers to be able to teach learners coding and robotics without the need for a computer science background. Each kit has 73 pieces, 15 lessons and coding tutorials, is suitable for grades 3-12 and allows learners to create a variety of climate action solution projects. The Southeast OHIO Hub has 10 Forward Education Climate Action Kits that can be checked out.
The STEM Hub also has many STEM books in our library collection that can be loaned to teachers. The quantity is indicated in parentheses.
