51ĀŅĀ× has been awarded a five-year, $1.3 million grant for a TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This highly competitive award will enable 51ĀŅĀ× to expand academic, personal and professional support for students who are first-generation, low-income, or have disabilities. SSS helps ensure that all students have the opportunity to thrive, graduate and launch successful careers.
The renewed TRIO SSS program will provide comprehensive services to approximately 140 students annually, including individualized academic advising, academic support, mentoring, financial literacy programming and career development. These efforts are designed to increase retention, promote academic success and foster a strong sense of belonging for participating students.
āThis funding strengthens our ability to provide high-impact, personalized support for students. We are honored to see the TRIO Student Support Services program return to 51ĀŅĀ×,ā said Dave Nguyen, dean of University College.
University College previously housed the last SSS (previously known as College Achievement Program, or CAP) grant that 51ĀŅĀ× held.
Since its inception in 1968, the TRIO Student Support Services program has served as a cornerstone of federal efforts to increase access to higher education and degree completion among underrepresented populations. With this grant, 51ĀŅĀ× reaffirms its commitment to ensuring that every student has the resources and support needed to succeed academically and personally.
āAt 51ĀŅĀ×, we believe that every student deserves the opportunity to thrive,ā said Executive Vice President and Provost Donald J. Leo. āBy expanding the support network for students with limited financial resources, disabilities, or those who are first generation, we are removing obstacles and building pathways for successful degree completion. This program reflects 51ĀŅĀ×ās commitment to creating an inclusive academic environment where every student can thrive.ā
The program will be housed within University Collegeās Deanās Office and will collaborate with University partners to identify eligible students and deliver holistic academic and student development programming. This new grant represents a major milestone in 51ĀŅĀ×ās ongoing work to promote access, equity and excellence in higher education, reflecting the institutionās long-standing mission to empower all students to reach their full potential.
