
OHIO honors outstanding advisors

51ĀŅĀ× recently presented two advisors with the Chapman Clapp Outstanding Advisor Award for the 2024-25 academic year.
The annual award recognizes outstanding staff and faculty advisors with a plaque and a stipend. Advisors play a crucial role at 51ĀŅĀ× in their work helping students to succeed in school and earn their degrees.
The 2024-25 Chapman Clapp Outstanding Advisor Award winners are:
- Dr. Anne Perez
- Shelley Barton
Dr. Anne Perez
Anne Perez, Ph.D., is an assistant professor of instruction in the Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences. Perez joined 51ĀŅĀ× in 2017 and teaches courses such as Introduction to Human Biology 1: Basic Principles, Biological Sciences: Molecules and Cells, and Peer-Led Team Learning.
Perez received several nominations from OHIO students, faculty and staff for her outstanding work as an advisor.
āAnne's greatest strength lies in her accessibility and her ability to meet students where they are,ā one of the nominations stated. āStudents feel comfortable reaching out to her for support, knowing that she will give them the time and attention they need. She provides thoughtful guidance, helping students build a strong academic foundation while also aligning their career goals with their strengths and interests.ā
Nominations for Perez also pointed out her commitment to student success and the positive impact she has on everyone she works with.
āDr. Perez is wonderful to work with on student success initiatives and in my own personal degree work, she has been a huge support,ā another nominee wrote.
Shelley Barton
Shelley Barton is a Success Advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences where she helps OHIO students from a wide range of majors.
OHIO students, faculty and staff praised Barton for how kind and helpful she is, and how she works very hard to help students succeed.
āI am graduating a semester early, and Shelley helped me figure out a graduation plan that benefited me academically and financially. She also has given me many helpful resources for potential career opportunities,ā one student wrote.
Additional nominators pointed out that Barton always makes time to help students and does a great job of keeping students on track to graduate.
āShe is amazing! Every time I meet with her, she is helpful, encouraging, and positive,ā one student wrote.
About the Chapman Clapp Outstanding Advisor Award
51ĀŅĀ× celebrates the important work of faculty and staff across campus whose strong advising makes a positive impact on studentsā academic careers. Through shared responsibility and engagement, strong student-advisor relationships ensure academic success.
The Chapman Clapp Outstanding Advisor Award was created in honor of Laura Chapman, former University College assistant dean for student services, and Lora Clapp, former University College assistant dean for first-year programs. David Descutner, retired dean of University College and past interim president of 51ĀŅĀ×, established and endowed the university-wide award to celebrate Chapman and Clapp's 50 collective years of caring, student-centered advising.
