51 students, faculty and staff now have access to GPT-5 in Copilot Chat through the university’s Microsoft 365 license at no additional cost in the web version of Copilot. This upgrade replaces the previous GPT-4 model and offers improvements in accuracy, reasoning, and context-aware responses.
What’s new in GPT-5
- Improved reasoning and accuracy for complex questions.
- Better handling of long conversations and large documents.
- Support for text and image inputs in the same chat.
- Typically faster, more contextual responses than GPT-4.
How you might use Copilot
- Summarizing readings, articles, or meeting notes.
- Outlining papers, presentations, or reports.
- Brainstorming ideas or drafting professional messages.
- Explaining complex concepts in simpler terms.
- Analyzing or organizing data and information.
How to access GPT-5
- Go to and sign in with your OHIO email.
- Look for the banner that reads: “You are using Copilot Chat with GPT-5 with standard access.”
- Start a conversation or upload a file to try the new features.
- Integration inside Word, Excel, and PowerPoint remains part of Microsoft’s premium offering and is not included in OHIO’s current license.
Notes and limitations
- During peak times, performance may be slower or temporarily limited.
- Availability of GPT-5 may differ between Copilot Chat on the web and in-app Copilot experiences.
- Always review Copilot’s output for accuracy and originality before using it, and avoid entering confidential or personal information.
