Social work graduate honored with Spirit of Southern Award

Before she ever sat in a college classroom, Mary Brady had already faced challenges that would shape her future in social work. This spring, she crossed the stage as a licensed professional – and the 2025 Spirit of Southern award recipient.

Brady, of Ironton, earned both her Associate in Applied Science and her Bachelor of Social Work at . She was selected for the Spirit of Southern Award, presented annually to one graduating student who excels academically and demonstrates a strong commitment to campus involvement and community service.

She explained that her interest in social work is deeply personal.

ā€œGrowing up was difficult, and I faced many personal challenges, including struggles with substance use,ā€ she said. ā€œThese experiences gave me a passion for helping others who face similar obstacles and led me to pursue a career in social work.ā€

That passion, combined with perseverance and education, led to a major milestone this spring – passing the Licensed Social Worker exam.

ā€œI’m excited to begin using my skills to make a positive difference in people’s lives,ā€ she said. ā€œI plan to encourage others toward growth and healing.ā€

Turning challenges into achievements

Brady said her time at OHIO Southern helped her realize she could transform personal hardship into purpose.

ā€œMy time at OHIO helped me realize that my past does not define me—it strengthens me,ā€ she said. ā€œThe support and education I received pushed me to believe in my ability to advocate for others and create lasting change.ā€

Among her favorite memories at OHIO Southern were the relationships she built.

ā€œSpending time with my peers and experiencing the camaraderie we built together made my journey even more meaningful,ā€ she said.

She credits faculty mentors Dr. Joy Shytle and Dr. Glenn Abraham for their support.

ā€œThey bring different perspectives, which I deeply appreciate, and they have consistently shown kindness and support throughout my time at OHIO,ā€ she said.

The path to graduation, Brady explained, was not easy.

ā€œOvercoming a difficult childhood and struggles with substance use were major challenges for me,ā€ she said. ā€œThese experiences taught me resilience, empathy, and the importance of persistence in the face of adversity.ā€

To students just beginning their academic journey, Brady offers a message of encouragement.

ā€œNever give up on yourself, even when things get hard,ā€ she said. ā€œYour struggles can become your strength. Lean on your support systems and believe that you are capable of more than you realize.ā€

ā€œBeing an OHIO graduate means I have turned my challenges into achievements,ā€ she said. ā€œIt symbolizes hope, perseverance, and the opportunity to help others find their own paths to success.ā€
