Patton College to host second discussion in new series, Global Issues on Immigration

51ĀŅĀ×’s Patton College of Education is featuring the second panel discussion in its new Munch and Learn Series: Global Issues on Immigration. ā€œHonoring the Experiences of Immigrant Populations in Research and Scholarshipā€ will be held on Monday, March 8, from noon to 1:30 p.m.

The virtual Microsoft Teams presentation features a panel that will discuss how we honor the experiences of immigrant populations in research and scholarship. In this session, researchers will discuss how to gain entrĆ©e and build trust within the community, bringing immigrants’ experiences to the foreground. Various theoretical frameworks that can stimulate thinking about immigrant-focused research will be discussed, as well as appropriate types of research design.

The panel features Dr. Bhaskar Upadhyay, associate professor, Curriculum & Instruction, University of Minnesota; Dr. Emmanuel Jean Francois, associate professor, Educational Studies; and Dr. Mike Kopish, associate professor, Teacher Education. The moderator of the discussion is Dr. Dwan Robinson, associate professor and department chair, Educational Studies; and the convener is Dr. Sara Helfrich, senior associate dean for research and graduate studies.

Take-aways include:

  • Learn about the importance of building trust between researchers and participants
  • Understand the importance of bringing immigrants' experiences to the foreground
  • Begin to understand various types of research designs used in this type of work, such as participatory action research and micro-ethnographic/discourse analysis, and why they are appropriate
  • Enjoy a discussion of theoretical frameworks that can help us think about immigrant-focused research (e.g., transformative theories, critical theories, Freire, Gee)
