Instant revenge

Following on from Tuesday night’s cup exit at the hands of Barnsley, Reading was able to inflict immediate retribution on the Yorkshire side at Oakwell. For Brendan Rodgers it was a delightful sight to see his Reading team come from behind and win 3-1, mainly because it was Reading’s first league win with Rodgers at the helm.

A pair of goals from Daniel Bogdanovic, including an injury time penalty put paid to Reading’s chances of a long run in this season’s Carling Cup. Reading were looking to follow up the hiding they handed out to Burton Albion in the First Round, but a resilient Barnsley side proved impossible to get past.

Reading’s difficult start to the season continued with a 3-1 home defeat at the hands of Sheffield United. Matthew Mills had given Reading an early lead, but goals from Stephen Quinn, Jamie Ward and David Cotterill saw the visitors fight back to claim all the points.

Royals drown Brewers

A five star performance saw Reading stroll into the Second Round of the Carling Cup, as Football League new boys Burton Albion were thrashed 5-1 at the Madejski Stadium. Brendan Rodgers’ team chalked up the first home win at the Madejski Stadium since late January with Nicholas Bignall and David Mooney both grabbing a brace, and Gylfi Sigurdsson also weighing in with a goal.

Another opening day scoreless draw with Forest

Bathed in glorious August sunshine the Madejski Stadium welcomed a brand new season. Reading’s opening fixture saw them pitted against Nottingham Forest, whom they also opened against last season, although that match was at the City Ground. However, for the second season in a row, Reading opened their season with a scoreless draw.
