A wonderful pair of headed goals from Shane Long gave Reading a vital away victory against Norwich City in deepest East Anglia. Long popped up in the 68th minute to fire Reading into the lead and then sealed the points ten minutes later with a well headed second goal. The match had huge significance for the home side with Norwich now staring relegation firmly in the face. As for Reading, the win means that if results go their way this Sunday, a swift return to the Premier League will be their reward.

On an afternoon that offered conditions to remind everyone of summer’s impending arrival, Reading offered little in the way of sunny moments and could only manage a 0-0 draw against relegation threatened Barnsley.

Reading’s hopes of automatic promotion took a further knock as they slumped to a home defeat to Sheffield United. Brian Howard scored a goal on the hour mark that gave Kevin Blackwell’s side a 1-0 victory and also saw the Blades jump further ahead of Reading and indeed Birmingham City, into second place in the Championship table.

Reading’s quest for a swift return to the Premier League took another twist with a 0-0 draw away at Coventry City. In a match where neither side was able to break the stalemate, Reading’s chances of scoring were very limited. The draw means Reading remain in third place, but now sit level on points with fourth place Sheffield United, who are Reading’s next opponents this Friday at the Madejski Stadium.

If England were worried about playing at Wembley on April 1st, it certainly seemed understandable, as they scraped past Ukraine in this crucial World Cup qualifier. A late goal from John Terry saw off Ukraine and kept up England’s charge towards South Africa. The win continues England’s excellent form in qualifiers under Fabio Capello with this being their straight fifth win of their qualifying campaign.
