Honors Tutorial College Program

Chemistry Major

The chemistry major in OHIO's Honors Tutorial College provides outstanding students with the opportunity to progress beyond material covered in conventional courses and work closely with dedicated faculty. Students have the option of the following tracks within the major: Biochemistry, Chemistry, Forensic Chemistry, and Pre-medicine.

Students work directly with faculty each semester; tutors meet with students individually, or in small groups, for a 60-90 minute session each week and provide one-on-one instruction, personalized to the student's needs and interests. Graduates of the program typically go on to graduate school or professional school (medicine, pharmacy, dental).

Curriculum

Students must complete at least 120 credit hours, maintain a minimum GPA of 3.5, and fulfill all university and HTC requirements including coursework in chemistry, calculus, physics, and honors tutorials.

Four Tracks

The chemistry honors tutorial program has four tracks students must choose between, which impacts their academic requirements:

  • Chemistry
  • Biochemistry
  • Forensic Chemistry
  • Premedicine

Honors Tutorial and Thesis

Students complete eight tutorials, including two devoted to an original senior honors thesis. Three of the tutorials focus on the core chemistry curriculum and are determined by the Director of Studies. Three of the tutorials are subject-based and are determined by the student or in conjunction with the Director of Studies.

Students must also complete a high-quality, advisor-approved thesis that reflects original research and analysis in the field.

Graduates of OHIO's chemistry degrees are employed in environmental, pharmaceutical and other chemical companies throughout the country.

Jobs held by recent graduates include applications lab technician, attorney, associate chemist, auditor, chemist, research and discovery chemist, chemistry and physics teacher, criminalist, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine, drug analyst, environmental engineer, pharmacist, physician, quality analysis process chemist, and technology transfer manager.
