Overview 

This exclusive class offers the opportunity for 51 students to work side-by-side with a notable music producer, allowing them to serve in an apprenticeship role as a team during recording and mixing sessions. 

Joel Hamilton, a Brooklyn-based record producer, engineer, and musician, is the co-owner of Studio G Brooklyn. He boasts Grammy and Latin Grammy nominations, and has showcased his talents on acclaimed projects like Highly Suspect's Grammy-nominated "Mister Asylum" and "The Boy Who Died Wolf." Hamilton's collaboration highlights include working alongside Rick Rubin and Paul McCartney for the Emmy-nominated “McCartney 3-2-1”, Mixing with Danny Elfman, engineering for Bomba Estereo's Latin Grammy-nominated “Elegancia Tropical,” and producing for artists ranging from The Black Keys to Tom Waits. A multi-instrumentalist, Joel is also part of the band Book of Knots and has contributed to soundtracks, such as the film “Charlie, Victor, Romeo” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013.

This program is managed by the Scripps College of Communication.

Living Arrangements

Students will stay in a hotel in the entire duration of the program.

This program is offered annually and typically opens for application by the beginning of September.

Students will take the MDIA 4903 to earn a total of 3 credit hours.

Cost 

The following information is intended to help participants understand the estimated costs associated with the program.  For additional information regarding program costs, please refer to Understanding Program Costs for Ohio-Credit Programs.

  • The total estimated cost for 2026 is still being finalized and cost information will be updated when the next program cycle opens for application.
    • Undergraduate estimate: $TBD + 3 Credits of Spring Athens-Campus Tuition/Fees*

Tuition rates are based on participant's Tuition Guarantee or Graduate Program of Study (refer to Bursars for more information).

The credit hours offered for a Short-Term Spring program are part of the spring semester course load. Participants will not incur additional tuition costs for the spring semester if they are taking 12-20 (Undergraduate) or 9-18 (Graduate) credits including the credit hours associated with this program. Students taking less or more than a full course load will see their tuition adjusted accordingly.

Eligibility and Application Requirements

This program is open to upperclass MDIA students at 51. Applicants must be in good academic and judicial standing to participate.

Applicants are required to submit:

  1. A resume/cv
  2. A personal statement
  3. The names, emails, and phone numbers for 2 references who may be contacted regarding your application.

Students who will be on probation at any point during the program for a conduct offense that took place less than a calendar year from the program start date may not study abroad. Read the entire conduct policy. 

Participants must have a at least a high school diploma or the equivalent (e.g. GED) by the start date of the program to be considered for eligibility.  Students enrolled in College Credit Plus (CC+) are not eligible for study away programs.
