Alternate Spring Break in Appalachia

Students work in a garden at a library

The Alternate Spring Break program is an immersive, interdisciplinary experience rooted in service to the surrounding community. The program’s objective is to bridge the gap between students’ lives on campus and the richness of the life of our local community.

Students will explore various topics including public service and civic engagement, conservation, environmental health, Appalachian history, and societal issues. Service-learning projects with community partners will embed students in new communities, historically significant towns, and non-profit organizations.

Student Testimonial

I felt that this trip was really beneficial in enhancing my connections to Appalachia and rural Ohio. While I have lived in this area of Ohio all my life, I was still able to visit places and learn about things that I had never heard about before. This trip introduced me to a multitude of ways that I can give back to my community at a local level.
