Teaching and Learning CIT Recommendations

Points for Online Teaching Evaluations

The Teaching CIT makes the following observations with respect to online teaching evaluations:

  1. There is some concern that points given to complete online teaching evaluations may have an inflationary effect on those evaluations.
  2. However, the reality is that the completion rate is very low unless points are given.
  3. There is no uniform standard for how many points are given. This is currently left up to the instructor.
  4. To our knowledge there is no way for a student to opt-out of completing the evaluation without penalty.

Therefore, the Teaching and Learning CIT makes the following recommendations:

  1. The maximum point value that an instructor may give to complete the online evaluations is 1/2%.

    Sample Scenarios
Total Points in CoursePoints Allowed for Online Evaluations
    10005.0
    5002.5
    1000.5
  2. Students must be given the choice to not complete the evaluation--e.g. leave it blank without penalty.

Recommended Syllabus Statement for Student Use of Generative AI

The Teaching and Learning CIT has developed the statement below that can be added to your course syllabus to assist in setting expectations on the use of AI in assignments:

The 51ĀŅĀ× Code of Student Conduct. As outlined in the undergraduate catalog--any form of academic dishonesty, cheating, or plagiarism will result in a failing grade for this class and referral to 51ĀŅĀ× Community Standards.

The College of Business Generative AI Use for Academic Work Policy. Use of Generative AI, such as ChatGPT and Microsoft Bing-Chat, must maintain the highest standards of academic integrity and adhere to the OU Code of Student Conduct.

The use of Generative AI should be seen as a tool to enhance academic research, not as a replacement for critical thinking and originality in assignments. Students are not permitted to submit assignments that have been fully or partially generated by AI unless explicitly stated in the assignment instructions. All work submitted must be the original work of the student. Any ideas garnered from Generative AI research must be acknowledged with proper in-text citation and reference. Students may be asked to save the AI chat as a PDF file for verification.
